Combat History

Aptly named for the mythic winged horse, the ADV Pegasus and her sisters were, in their heyday, the fastest ships of the line in the galaxy and have served as a crucial part of the Republic fleet for decades. Designed to meet Akasha's new post-First War foreign policy objectives and using lessons learned from the Peregrine-class frigate and Tian Long-class heavy cruiser, Pegasus, the lead ship of her class, is a swift, mobile, multi-mission vessel combining a formidable weapons payload with reasonable survivability and incredible endurance. Along with the larger Tian Long-class, this class was the mainstay of the Fleet for much of the interwar period and these ships were highly prestigious and much sought after billets throughout the first part of the 22nd century.

Although the Pegasus-class definitely has some weaknesses, with the right skippers, these ships can be devastating. For example, during the War of Grey and Black against the Kingdom of Ticorman, Pegasus, along with her sisters Bellerophon and Généreux, was given the seemingly hopeless task of protecting the Republic's outposts along the Gwaden Corridor. Facing three Royal ship squadrons of equal strength, Captain of the Line Choi Sun-shin used his vessels' speed to decisive effect. Executing a series of hit-and-fade attacks while racing to face each enemy, Choi kept the Corish squadrons disoriented, off-balance and unable to link up. Wearing down the enemy, the much smaller Republic squadron destroyed or captured five opposing ships of the line while losing none of their own, and eventually the Royal Navy fled for the safety of their home ports.

Notable Members

Command Master Chief Petty Officer Eddie Aikau

For most of her service life, Command Master Chief Petty Officer Eddie Aikau was the heart and soul of the ADV Pegasus, providing common sense counsel to her officers and serving as a friendly, informal conduit between captains and crews. Command Master Chief Aikau spent his entire career onboard Pegasus, starting as a Seaman Apprentice on her shakedown cruise.

Though a womanizer who loved to drink a bit too much and general scoundrel, Aikau was also hard-working, courageous and loyal to a fault. While Pegasus was sent to resolve a dispute on the colony of New Ctesiphon, one of the warring factions killed most of the landing party and kidnapped Captain Tyrone Russell. Despite being cut off from the ship, the Chief rallied the survivors and mounted a successful rescue of the Captain, saving Russell's life and allowing Pegasus to complete her mission.

Master Chief Aikau died as he would have liked, on his feet protecting the ship and crew he loved while repelling a boarding action during the Battle of Falkland Yard. Captain Mazen gave him a posthumuous battlefield promotion, and when Aikau was buried with full honors at the National Cemetery on Valkyrie, no less a personage than the Chancellor was in attendance.
