An Example of PlayThe Example of Play is to aid newcomers who are unfamiliar with the Century System: The party in the Example consists of Thurston Piermont IV the Faceman, Eva Velasquez the Ronin, Sam McDowell the Gumshoe, and Hwang Mulan the Thief. For more information, see the Character Templates Chapter of Wild Sphere: The Roleplaying Game. The party has selected Eva as their leader.
As violence and lawlessness escalated, Anna Velasquez, the Sheriff's wife, was mysteriously murdered. Sheriff Velasquez crawled inside a bottle, and the City Council hired Juan Rodriguez as the new Chief Deputy to take over the Sheriff's Department and to restore law and order. It has been an uphill battle for Deputy Rodriguez, and the party arrives shortly after a vicious gang known as the Wolfpack arrives from offworld and begins to terrorize the countryside surrounding Tombstone. An Example of a Skill Roll
GM: As the show ends, the chorus girls file off stage. Thurston: As Millie walks by, I'm going to wrap my arm around her waist and offer to buy her a drink. I'm going to try a Seduction Skill Roll. GM: [decides that based on her background, and the fact that she is single, and that Thurston has been making eye contact w/her throughout the show, the base chance that Millie will be successfully picked up by a stranger for a drink is 25 percent] Your base Target Number is 25 percent. Thurston: Does she have anything better to do right now? GM: [musing] Nope. Okay, your base Target Number is 30 percent. Thurston: Okay, I've got Level 2 Seduction, and the relevant abilities are Personality and Appearance. I've got 14 for both of those. Plus, I've got Sex Appeal at 5 FPs. That brings the TN up to 73 (30 + 6 + 32 + 5 = 73). [rolling a d100] I got a 45. GM: Okay, that's under the TN so you are successful. Millie decides to take you up on your offer. An Example of Combat
GM: Roll for Initiative. Since Thurston is shocked and chagrined by the flying liquor, he gets a 1 point penalty. Sam:[Rolling two six-sided dice] Okay, I rolled an 11. My Agility score is 13, but my lined trenchcoat gives me an Agility penalty of 2 so, while I'm wearing it, I have an Agility score of 11. Thus, with my Agility bonus of 1, that's 12 for initiative for this round. Mulan: I have an Agility bonus of 4, and I roll a... oh crap, a 3. My leather jacket has no Agility penalty. So I have a 7. Thurston: I got a 12, and subtracting my Agility penalty of 1 and the surprise penalty of 1, I have a 10. Eva: I roll a 6. My flak jacket gives me an Agility penalty of 1. That brings my stat bonus down to 2, so I've got an 8. GM [rolling for Bart and his two buddies, Vinnie and Andy]: Okay, Bart gets an 8, Vinnie gets a 9, and Andy gets a 5. Both Eva and Bart have an 8 for this round, but since FP users go before non-FP users for tied initiative, the order for this round is Sam, Thurston, Vinnie, Eva, Bart, Mulan, and Andy. Sam: Okay, I'm all the way across the room. I'll use all my Movement Points to charge toward Thurston and Bart, which will bring me into Medium Range for my .357 Magnum next round. Thurston: Okay, now it's my turn. Alright, payback time. I fire my Avenger at Bart. It's short range so I have a base 60 percent chance to hit. My Agility penalty of 3 percent and my Skill bonus of 3 percent cancel each other out. I'll also spend a Fate Point to increase my chance to hit by 25 percent, so my Target Number is 85. [Rolling d100] 86. Oh, so close! Okay, I'll spend another FP to increase my TN by another 10 to 95. GM: Okay, that's a success then. Roll damage. Thurston: [rolling d6] 6! Take that! GM: Bart staggers in pain as the 9mm round slams into him. Vinnie spots Sam running and decides to a pop a burst of 10 rounds at the Gumshoe with his SMG. He's attacking at medium range, with a base 40 percent chance to hit. He also has a 3 percent Agility bonus. However, his target is moving, a penalty of 20 percent. Therefore, his TN is 23, and [rolling d100] he gets a 34 so the attack misses. Eva: Okay, now I get to make an action, right? I'm going to go full auto on my assault rifle and fire 15 bullets at Bart. [Rolling d100] 99... Doh! GM: [Ignoring any other modifiers] Critical Failure. You miss the Bart but hit Thurston. Roll damage. Eva: [Rolling 3d10] Sorry, Thurston. 16. Thurston: Crap, I've only got 10 hit points! Even with my leather jacket's Damage Resistance of 1, I'd be down to -5. I'm going to have to burn 2 Fate Points to force the attack to miss. GM: Bad Bart swings at Thurston with his Chainsaw. It's a melee attack, so the base TN is 60, plus he has an Agility score bonus of 6 percent, so his Target Number is 66. [Rolling d100] 66! He just barely succeeds. For damage... [Rolling 2d6 and getting a 7] Bart rolls a 7, but he does an additional 2 points of damage because of his exceptional strength, for a total of 9 points. Thurston: [groaning] I'm going to spend another 2 Fate Points to force Bart's attack to miss as well. Mulan: I'm on the second story balcony. I'm going to jump from the balcony, onto the nearest card table. GM: Okay, since you have the Perk of Catfall and the fall is less than 10 meters, you suffer no damage. Andy runs from the doorway to join the fight. The players and NPCs with remaining MPs in this round complete any desired actions. GM: Okay, new combat round. Roll for Initiative. An Example of
